Ford Romeo High Speed Track

Angelo Iafrate was the lead design-build contractor on this multi-million dollar reconstruction project – coordinating the design, construction and oversight process with a design-build team consisting of six key engineering and construction partners.

The existing High Speed Track (HST), a 5-mile long, 5-lane wide parabolic surface, was completely removed and reconstructed within six months of the initial track closure.

Well-over 150,000 tons of asphalt and concrete pavement was removed, recycled (on-site) and replaced as a 21AA aggregate base for the HST – avoiding the excessive off-site disposal cost associated with this material. Additionally, 50,000 cubic yards of earthwork, coupled with 25,000 feet of drainage piping and ditching, was added to enhance the long-term durability of the HST.

70,000 tons of asphalt pavement was placed in 4 – 1 ½ inch thick lifts at an average rate of 1,200 tons per day across all 5 lanes in a parabolic shape with a maximum cross slope of 32 degrees. This project was delivered on-time and under budget.
