DTW Nothern Portion Runway 4R-22L Reconstruction
The Detroit Metropolitan Airport is located in Wayne County, Michigan. At over 11,000 feet in length, Runway 4R/22L is the longest runway at the airport and is crucial for the operation of heavy aircraft such as 747-400’s and DC-10’s that fly overseas routes.
Iafrate Construction was contracted by the Wayne County Airport Authority to complete the Northern Portion of the 4R/22L and Associated Taxiways Reconstruction. Due to the importance of this runway to the overseas routes and the climatic restrictions at certain times of the year; the project was awarded based on the constructions taking place over two construction seasons (2012 and 2013). Penalties for opening of the runway past the contract obligation date was $200,000.00 per day.
Despite a number of unknown and unforeseen underground obstructions, the runway was opened to air traffic prior to the contractually obligated date in both of the construction seasons.
